Medical research

Medical research is one of the core missions here at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH), a university affiliated hospital and a medical center. Medical research not only affects our competitiveness, but also has a profound impact on enhancing medical technology, education and quality in Taiwan. NTUH strongly believes that innovation is the essence of medical research. The fruits bear from research and development are results of the dedicated researchers, and the ultimate goal of research and development is to uphold the belief that "Patients Come Before All Else.”

NTUH's dedication to medical research has achieved many clinical "firsts" over the years, both globally and in Asia. Noteworthy achievements include pioneer research in hepatitis, lung cancer, organ transplantation, cancer diagnostics and treatment, biophotonics, tissue material, and critical emergency, as well as international recognition for achievements in reproductive medicine and rare disease screening. We have attained international standards in areas such as immunology, cardiovascular medicine, infertility, dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, development of various types of minimally invasive surgery and robotic arms, and established research environments for clinical trials. NTUH has also refined its clinical treatment guidelines, including new standards of management of spontaneous pneumothorax patients and the novel treatment strategy for Helicobacter pylori infectron. The innovative treatment guidelines have cured numerous patients and earned international recognition. In response to the national policies and global development trends in biomedical sciences, NTUH has proposed 16 mid/long-term prospective areas for research:

  1. Neurological and psychiatric medicine
  2. Genome medicine, proteomics, and metabolomics.
  3. Vaccine development, cancer immunotherapy, therapeutic monoclonal antibodies.
  4. Precision medicine, clinical trial design and execution, clinical trial-related fields.
  5. Gerontology.
  6. Artificial organs and medical equipment and assistive devices.
  7. Stem cell biology, cell therapy, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine.
  8. Environmental medicine.
  9. Obesity and metabolic syndrome.
  10. Medical education, medical ethics, and medical attitude.
  11. Hospital management and medical informatics.
  12. Medical applications of glycation.
  13. Bioinformatics and systems biology.
  14. Emerging fields in pediatrics.
  15. Medical and biological big data analysis.
  16. Other themes that may contribute to the hospital's development (new medical or diagnostic technologies).

Moving forward, NTUH will continue to invest in research funding, personnel, research teams, and equipment, with the aim of adapting to improvements in its emergency and critical care services, driving the development of medical technology, contributing to the implementation of holistic healthcare, developing integrated databases and statistical consulting analysis services, enhancing research quality and volume, complying with national policies, and raising the nation's reputation.
